Marching Band Step Off Meeting
The 2012 Marching Band season officially gets under way on Tuesday, May 15 at 7PM. Meet your new drum majors, section leaders, staff members, see the new schedule and find out about our new show!

World renowned drummer and Director of Jazz Studies at the famous Juilliard School of Music, New York, Carl Allen visited with students of the Lone Peak High School Advanced Big Band. Joining Carl Allen was the ever popular Snow College Jazz Orchestra under the Direction of Willie Applewhite. The band performed several selection from the Duke Ellington and Thad Jones library.
Keeping it fun and upbeat, Carl spoke of his time playing with Dizzy Gillespie. Among the advice Carl gave the students Calr said, "Music should always sing and dance. When you understand the melody your parts starts to make sense." "There's no such thing as saving your best for the next performance." "You should serve the music." Winter Guard finishes 2nd at the UWGA State FinalsThe Winter Guard under the direction of Joann Cook and Maria Andersen placed 2nd at the State Finals held at American Fork HS on April, 7th. The Guard performing their show "Animal" placed in the top three all season long. Congratulations to the team!
Advanced Big Band returns from Monterey NGF![]() Monterey Bay Area
Performing at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival - Next Generation Festival the Lone Peak High School Big Band performed along side some of the best jazz bands, combos, jazz vocal groups, college jazz bands, and jazz legends. Artists and adjudicators for the festival included Matt Harris, composer/piano, Shelly Berg, composer/piano, Corey Christiansen, guitar, Mary Fettig, saxophone, legendary Ray Drummond, bass, Jeff Hamilton, drums, and Wayne Wallace, composer/trombone and many others.
The Advanced Big Band was selected by faculty of the prestigous Berklee School of Music (Boston) as one of twelve finalist high school big bands from around the country. Winners in the high school big band division included 1st place- Los Angeles County School for the Arts (Jason Goldman), 2nd place- Folsom HS (Curtis Gaesser), and Rio Americano HS (Josh Murray). It was amazing experience where the band was able to see some of the best high school jazzers in the country. Mr. McKendrick's favorite was the American Music Program directed by award-winning director, Thara Memory. Have listen as the band plays Matt Catingub's "A Minor Case of the Blues." Concert Bands perform at Region IV FestivalThe LP Concert & Symphonic Bands performed recently at the Region IV Concert Band Festival held at Lone Peak HS on April 29, 2012. Performing Pierre La Plante's "In the Forest of the King" Mvts I-III and Will Huff's "The Show Boy," the Concert Band received a II+, II+, II. The LP Symphonic Band performed Dwayne Milburn's "American Hymsong Suite," and James Barnes arrangement of "Anchors Aweigh." The Symphonic Band received straight superior ratings and will next perform at the UMEA State Concert Band Festival on April 20th held at Jordan High School. Adjudicators included Dr. Kirt Saville, BYU, Rod Wayman, Syracuse HS, and Steve Shirts, Cedar HS. Take a listen below to hear the band play American Hymnsong Suite Mvt. III- Scherzo.
Straight Superiors for the Advanced Big Band
The Lone Peak Advanced Big Band finished it's state competitions with a rousing Straight Superior Rating at the State Jazz Festival. The band was one of only 3 5A bands to receive straight superior ratings and also received a superior rating in sight reading. The band next competes in Monterey, California on Saturday, March 31 as a National Finalist at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival - Next Generation Festival. Following the NJF Festival the band will prepare to entertain Northern Utah County at it's annual Jump, Jive, and Wail! Dinner Dance. Tickets will soon become available.
Symphonic Band Excels at BYU Concert Band FestivalIn the early morning hours of 6am on Saturday March 10 the Symphonic Band loaded the bus and headed to play at the BYU Concert Band Festival. As the first scheduled band of the day, the band performed "Anchors Aweigh" arranged by John Barnes and "American Hymnsong Suite" by Dwayne Milburn.
Following their performance the band was given a clinic by Bruce Moss, Director of Bands at Bowling Green University. Having performed the "American Hymnsong Suite" with his own band, Dr. Moss was excited to hear a high school band performing it and was able to give some great instruction. The Lone Peak High School Big Bands had outstanding performances at the recent 2012 Region IV Jazz Festival held at Lone Peak High School. The Intermediate Big Band scored II+, II, and II- and had a II+ in sight reading and the Advanced Big Band scored a region best I, I, I, and a sight reading I.
Congratulations to both big bands with great music and outstanding soloists. The Advanced Big Band will next perform at the Utah State Jazz Festival March 23rd at Murray High School and the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival NGF in Monterey, California on March 30-April 1. The Award Winning Lone Peak Winter Guard has started the year with outstanding finishes at both the West High Competition and the AFHS Guard Competition placing 1st & 3rd.

The Lone Peak High School Jazz Ensemble recently performed at Brigham Young University for the Essentially Ellington Regional Jazz Festival. The band received an outstanding reception from clinicians and adjudicators receiving superior ratings for the concert.
After their morning performance and clinic the band travelled to Salt Lake City to support the State Champion Basketball team. Immediately following the game the band learned they were to featured in the evening concert featuring Jazz legend John Faddis. It's OFFICIAL! Big Band I named FINALIST at Monterey!
The Lone Peak Advanced Big Band was named as a finalist for the prestigious 2012 Monterey Jazz Festival - Next Generation Festival.
Bands from across the country submitted recordings judged by faculty at the Berklee School of Music. By blind listening, twelve bands were selected as finalists. Since it's inception, three bands from Utah have ever been selected for the festival, the last being in 2007. The festival runs from March 30-April 1, 2012 in beautiful Monterey, California featuring the top college, conglomerate, public school, and middle school bands in the U.S. This year's featured artist in residence is trumpeter, Ambrose Akinmusire. On Saturday, February 4 the 2012 All-State Jazz Band performed for the Utah Music Educators Association yearly conference in St. George. The band was under the direction of Grammy nominated composer, arranger, orchestrator, and musician Tim Davies. The 19-piece band was represented by two Lone Peak students, Will Brooksby, bass, and Kylie Kap, vocal.
Students arrived on Thursday, February 2 and held an evening rehearsal at Dixie State College. During the evening, members of the Utah Band Association (UBA) were treated a clinic with the band with legendary jazz educator Dr. Ray Smith of Brigham Young University. Friday, the band spent the entire day from 8:00am-8:00pm in rehearsals. The conference culminated on Saturday with a concert featuring the band performing Davies' music including, "Blacknail," "Pythagatha," "Caravandalized," "Epic," "Chocolate Requiem,", and his Grammy nominated instrumentalist, "Counting to Infinity." On Wednesday, January 18 the Advanced Jazz Band recorded five tracks for their audition to the prestigious Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition (NY) & the Next Generation Jazz Festival Competition hosted by the Monterey Jazz Festival (CA). Click listen hear the tracks.
2011-2012 All-State Selections
Congratulations to the the Lone Peak High School Students who were selected among hundreds of students to become members of the 2011-2012 All-State Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Band. The All-State Band & Orchestra will perform January 18-20 at Weber State University under the baton of world renowned composer Mark Camphouse. The All-State Jazz band will perform February 2-4 in St. George under the direction of Grammy-nominated artist and composer Tim Davies. Selections include:
